Or, is there a secret

September 3rd, 2010

Or, is there a secret message in what Suzie has to say? (I like secret messages, they’re cool).

My best advice on how being different is to just be yourself. And, that’s exactly what Miss Suzie Belle Johnson is trying to do. Just be herself!

If this is true; my perfect pony tail wearing friend is just trying to be Present, instead of being Here.

There is a difference, you know.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines ?Present? as follows:

pres?ent1
n. 1.A moment or period in time perceptible as intermediate between past and future; now.

Wow, I think Miss Suzie Belle is on to something. By being present, she is not only phsically in place but is recognizing the importance if RIGHT NOW, the place between past and future. Excellent choice of words, Suzie Belle.

Being present means that all the bad stuff that happened is the past is in the past and there is no worry about anything that might happen in the future. It’s all about being in the now, in the present.

Suzie Belle doesn’t got through her day regretting never getting to be a cheerleader, and she doesn’t worry about catching the eye of the football jock in the future.

Don?t be caught

September 3rd, 2010

Don?t be caught up in ?The B Myth.?

The B Myth is my terminology for the situation where a broker, financial planner or investment adviser is under the illusion that he has a ?business? when in actuality all he really has is a job. As John Bowen, a senior consultant in this area, says, ?If you build a system which revolves around you, it is difficult to transfer the business to anyone else. You own a job, and it?s hard to sell a job.? Yes, I know. When you went in the financial services business someone told you that ?you were in business for yourself, that you were building something for yourself.? In truth, that?s what you may have done — built something for yourself — which nobody else wants because it has little or no value to anyone but you.

(Toronto: Carswell, 2002) at 868.

Put this into vernacular CRA is saying that if you?re clever enough to come up with a plan Parliament didn?t think of (that is, one that doesn?t offend a specific anti-avoidance provision), it costs the government too much money in tax revenues, and CRA thinks you did only to avoid paying taxes, they will try to claw it back. Whether the courts permits this, will depend on the facts.

If the scheme considered in the Duke of Westminister was used in Canada today it “would probably be caught” by GAAR: Hogg, Magee and Li, Principles of Canadian Income Tax Law, 4th ed. (Toronto: Carswell, 2002) at 584.
GAAR, however, is not a criminal provision in the ITA.

External frame backpacks are

September 2nd, 2010

External frame backpacks are used primarily for backpacking trips that will require all of the essential equipment to survive be brought with you. There are many great reasons to have an external frame backpack for a trip. This type of backpack consists of a visible metal frame that supports a nylon pack. The pack attaches to the wearer via two thickly padded should straps and a padded hip strap that goes around the waist.

The frame distributes the weight over the shoulders and the hips to alleviate the spine from too much pressure. The external frame does carry a high center of gravity that makes it a little harder to keep balanced during activities. This does limit a backpacker to activities that require minimal balance control like walking. Biking and skiing are not recommended while wearing an external frame backpack.

The advantages of external backpacks are mainly due to their versatility.

September 2nd, 2010

Today, we have many choices in mattresses, from pillow-top to firm. But what happens if your mattress preferences change from day to day? Maybe an ultra-firm mattress works for you sometimes, but other times you prefer a softer bed. For changeable comfort, an air mattress just might be your best bet.

Air mattresses are equipped with inflatable, adjustable chambers. One such air mattress, the Sleep Number bed by Select Comfort, comes with two separate air chambers. A numbered remote dial controls each air chamber. The customer adjusts the mattress to the desired firmness — or softness — with the touch of a button. Since there are two chambers, each side of the bed can be controlled independently. This is ideal for partners with different mattress preferences.

LoungAir is offering a unique air mattress that converts to a lounge, chair, or recliner. Another type of air mattress is the low-cost, foldable variety. These inflatable mattresses are great for spare bedrooms, guest rooms, slumber parties, and even camping trips.

So, nian jot maai means???

September 2nd, 2010

So, nian jot maai
means??? To write a letter! Good, you’re improving already! :-)

Do you know what’s kow in the 3rd example.
Kow simply means rice but in this
context it means meal. Why? In Thailand,
rice is the staple food so when you say
gin kow, it is understood that you mean to eat (a meal).

In the 4th example, notice the word maa (come) and
eek krang (again). Also notice the na at the end of
the sentence. The Thai word na is used to soften or
make a sentence polite.

Also notice the Thai word in the last example,
hong suam which means toilet. If you would
like to know where’s the toilet, you can simply ask
“Hong suam you tee nai?”.

So far so good… are you still with me? :-)
Okay, let’s recap what we had learned earlier:

Dtong pai (must go)

Dtong kian (must write)

Dtong gin (must eat)

Dtong maa (must come)

How to express “should” using kuan ( )

If you would like to express that someone should
do something, you can say “Koon kuan…”. Just like
dtong (must), all you need to do is to simply
place a corresponding verb right after kuan (should)
to express the meaning you desire.

Below are some simple examples using kuan (should) that
you can learn from.

Once they pass this test they can

September 1st, 2010

Once they pass this test they can use the Registered Paralegal (RP) designation.

Legal assistants and paralegals must have the ability to document and present their findings and opinions to their supervising attorneys. They also need to understand legal terminology, have good research and investigative skills and be able to do legal research using a computer and the internet. They also need to stay abreast of new developments in the laws that affect their area of expertise. The most common way many legal assistants and paralegals expand their knowledge is by participating in continuing legal education seminars.

Because legal assistants and paralegals deal with the public on an ongoing basis they need to be “shining examples” of ethical standards for the legal profession. The National Association of Legal Assistants, the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and a few States have established ethical guidelines for them to follow.

Employment Outlook

Legal assistants and paralegals held about 224,000 jobs in 2004 with about 70% being employed by private law firms; most of the remainder worked for corporate legal departments and various levels of government.

massive hoard of hampton roads history needs a home

SOME NORFOLK postcards from the 1920s hang on the wall at the top of my stairs. They’re a set of three, showing the “new” Federal Building, a bustling Granby Street and the Custom House. They looked good. They were cheap. I bought them and put ‘em in a frame. Presto. Instant art.

They provide a sense of place and a bit of history.

From yellowed pictures to antique furniture with worn corners to boxes of dated knickknacks, most people have some way of tying themselves to the past. For me, it’s small. It’s the postcards.

And that’s why I was interested in Jack Hamilton. Hamilton aimed for something grander.

He was a Baptist minister in Newport News, and he was one of those people who could find a neighbor to greet in every shop and feast on a steady stream of hellos at Peninsula restaurants. His first hobby was collecting books. His personal library numbered an astonishing 30,000 volumes. Then he started stashing away Hampton Roads memorabilia.

Hamilton loved this region. He was raised here. He raised his family and five children here. He was fascinated by the evolution of local cities. He wondered at the way businesses turned over.

He worked at churches in Newport News for more than 40 years. The whole time, he was always looking for another piece for his collection – always looking for something that would one day end up in his closet or in his attic.

He gathered yearbooks from the Louise Obici School of Nursing, postcards of Norfolk buildings, Boy Scout flags, photos of the shipyards, humor books for Virginia judges, Christmas menus from the Navy and an autograph from Pat Nixon at a ship launch.

There were rare photographs from Hampton Institute – the precursor to Hampton University – exchanges between Richmond Times- Dispatch reporters, a Currier & Ives print of the sinking of the Civil War ship Cumberland and a book about the history of Norfolk County from 1902.

The items were uniquely Hampton Roads.

A sign for fresh crab meat. A recording of “Swing Low” by the Hampton Institute Quartet. Prints of tugboats motoring through the Elizabeth River.

In all, the collection is more than 7,000 items.

Hamilton died in July. He was 86. After loading up a moving van of his goods and buying folding tables at Costco, his son Jack is displaying the boxes, frames and dozens of binders in a building behind his home in Williamsburg.

“I knew he had a lot of stuff,” he said. “I didn’t know how much was there.”

To make room for the entire collection, Jack told me someone’s house would need a “Hampton Roads” room . A “Hampton Roads” wing might be more appropriate.

It could take months just to catalog.

Ideally, the material would go to a museum or a library or a historical society, but there are five siblings who have a stake. Jack put the collection on eBay last week.

The minimum bid is $62,500, a number based on Jack’s experience in the rare-book business. If it doesn’t sell, he’ll probably re- list it.

Hamilton didn’t have a master plan for his collection. He knew it was unrealistic that all of the items would stay together. He knew well from years of collecting that property changes hands.

And he knew that one day, someone else would appreciate the find.
